It was the year The Simpsons premiered, Mandela was finally freed, and the Hubble telescope was placed in orbit. Yep, 1990, hard to believe that almost two decades have past since then.

Let's take a few moments and warp back to 1990 and see what we memories we can dredge up of a forgotten time by reviewing: The Top 10 Songs of 1990.


1. Sinead O'Conner - Nothing Compares 2 U

Originally written by Prince and recorded by The Family in 1985, Nothing Compares 2 U was re-recorded by Irish singer Sinead O'Conner in 1990 and included on her second album I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got.

The song became an international success, topping the charts in the U.S., Australia, and the U.K. The video for Nothing Compares 2 U was a big hit as well, going on to win the Best Video Award at the 1990 MTV Video Music Awards.

2. Roxette - It Must Have Been Love

Originally entitled Christmas for the Broken Hearted the song was tweaked and had the single Christmas reference removed so that it could be used on the Pretty Woman soundtrack.

It Must Have Been Love went on to become the most successful single on the soundtrack selling over 500,000 copies and spending 2 weeks at #1 o the Billboard Hot 100 Charts.

The song was also an international success peaking high on the charts in Norway, Australia, the U.K., Sweden, Switzerland, Germany, and Austria.

3. Madonna - Vogue

Originally intended to be a 'B' side to help boost sales for the single Keep It Together executives at Warner Bros. realized that the Vogue was too good to be wasted in that manner and released it as a single and placed it on the I'm Breathless album.

The song was a huge success with the single selling over 6,000,000 copies worldwide making it to the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 and the Hot Dance Club Play charts.

Vogue also won an American Music Award for Best Single as well as a Rolling Stone Reader's Poll Award for Best Single.

The video for Vogue was a huge success as well and even to this day is considered one of the most iconical videos ever made. I was nominated for 9 and won 3 MTV Video Music Award in 1990.

4. En Vogue - Hold On

Hold On was En Vogue's first single off their first album and it went on to be one of the biggest hits of the whole decade.

Hold On eventually reached #1 on the U.S. Dance chart, #2 on the Billboard Hot 100, and #1 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks.

The song also reached #5 on the U.K. Singles Chart.

5. Bell Biv DeVoe - Poison

Bell Biv DeVoe was a spinoff of the group New Edition and their most famous single was Poison.

The song went on to reach #3 on the Billboard Top 100, and #7 on the Dance Charts.

6. Mariah Carey - Vision of Love

Written by Mariah Carey and Ben Margulies, Vision of Love was the first single off of Mariah's self-entitled debut album. The song was a big hit and ended up topping the Hot 100 Billboard charts for 4 consecutive weeks.

By August of 1990, just 4 months after it's release Vision of Love was certified gold with over 500,000 copies sold. The song went on to top the charts in New Zealand, the U.K., Canada, Australia, Ireland, and the Netherlands.

Vision of Love won a Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, a Sou Train Music Award for Best R&B/Soul Single and a BMI Songwriter Award.

7. Michael Bolton - How Am I Supposed to Live Without You?

Written by Michael Bolton and originally recorded by Laura Branigan in1983, How Am I Supposed To Live Without You was re-recorded by Michael Bolton in 1989 and was released on his Soul Provider album in 1990.

The song became Bolton's biggest hit reaching the top spot on both the Billboard Hot 100 and Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks charts.

8. Janet Jackson - Escapade

Written by Janet Jackson, James Harris III, and Terry Lewis, Escapade was the third single off Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814 album.

The song was a smash hit reaching the top of the Billboard Hot 100 in March 1990 and staying there for 3 weeks, making it the third of Janet Jackson's #1 hits.

Escapade also reached the top of the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Hot Dance Club Play charts. It's sales went on to exceed 500,000 units earning it a gold certification with the RIAA.

9. Jon Bon Jovi - Blaze of Glory

Recorded as a theme for the movie Young Guns II, Jon Bon Jovi had his only chart-topping hit as a solo artist.

Blaze of Glory reached the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 as well as the Billboard Album Rock Track charts.

The song also charted well in Australia and the U.K.

10. Snap - The Power

Snap's The Power opens with an enigmatic line in Russian that translates to “The American company Transceptor Technologies has started production of the ‘Personal Companion’ computer” in English.

The song first gained popularity in Germany where it reached #2 on the charts and was certified platinum. It then went on to top the U.K. charts where it received a platinum certification as well.

In the U.S. The Power reached #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #1 on both the Hot Dance Club Play and Billboard Hot Rap charts, as well as making it to #4 on the U.S. R&B chart. It was eventually certified platinum the U.S. as well.
